Painted Faces V1 Half past ten on a Friday morning Standing still on Turnpike Road I look around me And it feels like I’m falling V2 You don’t notice you just look the other way Passing by me as you go It’s all written In the words that I don’t say Chorus Painted faces cast in stone Listen to the world Through the fears they have grown Painted faces cast in stone, in stone, in stone V3 Changing places it’s just ordinary noise Echo chambers in my head Too far to travel If I listen to your voice Chorus Painted faces cast in stone Listen to the world Through the fears they have grown Painted faces cast in stone, in stone, in stone Middle Hear me, hold me, breathe me in Take me, tell me………. Reprise V1 Half past ten on a Friday morning Standing still on Turnpike Road I look around It feels like I’m falling

Call Off The Search V1 Call off the search I’ll only come back when I’m able Call off the search But leave my place set at the table Chorus Blooms red and white With perfumed thorns Colours fill the night In which you mourn V2 Call off the search You know that I just can’t stop running Call off the search It won’t change what I’m becoming Chorus Blooms red and white With Perfumed thorns Colours fill the night In which you mourn V3 Call off the search Being gone’s not being lost Call off the search I won’t come back at any cost Chorus Blooms red and white With Perfumed thorns Colours fill the night In which you mourn Middle You’re disappointed in me Why don’t you stop and Call off the search Chorus Blooms red and white With Perfumed thorns Colours fill the night In which you mourn Chorus Blooms red and white Perfumed thorns Colours fill the night In which you mourn

One Foot in the Garden V1 Strangest feelings as I look around Strangest echoes whisper from the ground One foot in the garden One foot in the door, I’ve found a way…. CHORUS Here I am calling out your name again My story on repeat You’re still out of reach Here I am calling out your name again I’m grieving what’s been spent Not knowing if you’re hell or heaven sent V2 Look above me, are the stars in line? Look inside me is my soul so blind? One foot in the garden One foot in the door, I’ve found a way…. CHORUS Here I am calling out your name again My story on repeat You’re still out of reach Here I am calling out your name again I’m grieving what’s been spent Not knowing if you’re hell or heaven sent MIDDLE Never really looking in the right places Coins in a fountain Written in the air the shape of the faces I know that you’re counting Losing sight of everything that I have ever known Feel the pulse of expectation beating in my bones CHORUS Here I am calling out your name again My story on repeat You’re still out of reach Here I am calling out your name again I’m grieving what’s been spent Not knowing if you’re hell or heaven sent

Still We Wait V1 I held you in my hand Lifted you from the table Turned you in my palm Crimson mark on your face, fragile as a lamb V2 There’s silence in the way Things that I’ve always known I couldn’t make you say Intention filling up my breath, quiet as a prayer CHORUS Still we wait inviting conversation Restless walls, no power to persuade Marks that stain then let go of my mystery Like a child who’s hiding from me V3 There’s history in the way Things that you’ve always carried I couldn’t make you stay Questions filling up my head, then you turn away CHORUS Still we wait inviting conversation Restless walls, no power to persuade Marks that stain then let go of my mystery Like a child who’s hiding from me MIDDLE Just as pearls go to ground And scatter where they fall Just as pearls go to ground And scatter where they fall They scatter where they fall V1 Reprise I held you in my hand Lifted you from the table Turned you in my palm Crimson mark on your face, fragile as a lamb CHORUS Still we wait inviting conversation Restless walls, no power to persuade Marks that stain then let go of my mystery Like a child who’s hiding from me

Passing Places Verse 1 Careless tourists rushing by Gone in a moment, no alibi They don’t stop, they don’t believe The wreckage they leave Verse 2 Here it started and here it ends Smoke obscures the road ahead Masking all that’s been and gone Stopping you from moving on Stopping you from moving on Chorus And I never thought you’d try so hard Too little too late Too much too soon Too far Verse 3 There’s flashing neon in your face Your restless engine’s run its race These sleeping soldiers just slow you down Second thoughts turn you around Second thoughts turn you around Chorus And I never thought you’d try so hard Too little too late Too much too soon Too far Middle And these passing places Are just turning pages These passing places Are just changing faces Chorus And I never thought you’d try so hard Too little too late Too much too soon Too far Chorus No I never thought you’d try so hard Too little too late Too much too soon Too far

Every Move 03:24
Every Move V1 The world keeps moving But I’m just standing still You say I’ll be a loser And I always will Chorus But every move is mine to make I’m climbing a ladder And I pray it doesn’t break V2 Rules are for bending So I’m picking up the pieces again A slight of your hand And I find I’m watching you instead Chorus But every move is mine to make I’m climbing a ladder And I pray it doesn’t break V3 Tables are turning But I’m not marking time I don’t need to be winning To know I’ll be alright Chorus But every move is mine to make I’m climbing a ladder And I pray it doesn’t break Middle Go ahead and blow me down Fill up your fire The winds will come around Go ahead and blow me down Fill up your fire The winds will come around Chorus Cos every move is mine to make I’m climbing a ladder And I pray it doesn’t break

Nothing Gold 04:12
Nothing Gold V1 Watching the world from where he stands Judgement in his mind No return, cap in hand Recalls what he’s left behind V2 Heading off shadows that are closing in They draw around his face An image of original sin Reflects without a trace Chorus Swirling circles in between What has gone and what’s to be Knowing that his dawn goes down to day Early frost reaching deep Soothing sadness into sleep Knowing that nothing gold can stay V3 Chilled and broken like autumn rain Night breath sweeps his heart I don’t know where he goes but he remains In between day and dark Chorus Swirling circles in between What has gone and what’s to be Knowing that dawn goes down to day Early frost reaching deep Soothing sadness into sleep Knowing that nothing gold can stay Reprise V1 Watching the world from where he stands Judgement in his mind No return, cap in hand Recalls what’s left behind

Close My Eyes Verse1 I close my eyes, lost behind Half asleep, twice as blind As moonless night Verse 2 Staring down these empty halls Voices held between these walls I hear you cry I hear you call Chorus And I fumble with your photographs Things you’ve left behind Solitude invading – empty rooms Distant miles Verse 3 And I’m watching you from another door And we both know I’ve walked this floor Not letting go Chorus And I fumble with your photographs Things you’ve left behind Solitude invading – empty rooms Distant miles Middle 1 And though all that I see are feathers While I’m here I remember And though all that I see are feathers While I’m here I remember Chorus And I fumble with your photographs Things you’ve left behind Solitude invading – empty rooms And I fumble with your photographs Things you’ve left behind Solitude invading – empty rooms Distant miles

Everything Takes Time V1 Did you ever look In mirror’s gaze? Open up the old book Of feathers and traces Of lies and ungentle graces V2 Did you ever wander Too close to the source? Thoughts that pull you under That bless, or curse Reflect a life that’s unrehearsed Chorus Everything takes time Simply follow nature’s sound Don’t tell me to step in line I’ll break your mould I’ll break my own ground V3 Did you really find A ghost in this machine? Secrets of your own mind The time and spaces in between Things that might still be Chorus Everything takes time Simply follow nature’s sound Don’t tell me to step in line I’ll break your mould I’ll break my own ground Middle You say ‘stick to what you know’ ‘Safe within your temple’ ‘Paying only what you owe’ Chorus Everything takes time Simply follow nature’s sound Don’t tell me to step in line I’ll break your mould I’ll break my own ground Reprise V1 Did you ever look In mirror’s gaze? Opened up the old book

Into the Light Verse 1 In your mind imagine Dreams so full of doubt Your coat with so many colours, you can’t even count Verse 2 It drapes around your shoulders The sun is on your face Morning chill air rises, Then fades away Chorus You don’t need to fly – Into the light Into the light Into the light Into the light Verse 3 Made from handless ruins Her secrets kept then gone A sorrow’s crown of sorrows Sending her on Verse 4 She grew up like her father She said she’d do it all Transforming every moment In the name of her call Chorus But you don’t need to fly Into the light Into the light Into the light Into the light Middle Mid the transformation Lies her frozen form Invisible impatience Shielding strobic storms Prison walls confining Still as fallow fields Nature re-designing Grey and darker streams Verse 5 And now she built a shelter As lonely as the sun Unravelling her future Before it’s begun Chorus But you don’t need to fly Into the light Into the light Into the light Into the light Into the light Into the light Into the light Into the light

about

“When you are in the middle of a story it isn't a story at all, but only a confusion; a dark roaring, a blindness, a wreckage of shattered glass and splintered wood; like a house in a whirlwind, or else a boat crushed by the icebergs or swept over the rapids, and all aboard powerless to stop it. It's only afterwards that it becomes anything like a story at all. When you are telling it, to yourself or to someone else” (Margaret Atwood)

The debut album from Glasgow based singer/songwriter Carol Beckwith takes inspiration from artworks created as the narratives of artists who use art to describe their mental health recovery. Each song is an introspection on what it means to be mentally well in the face of our own, often difficult, personal circumstances.

This album is an exploration of stories that other people tell and reminds us why they should matter to everyone. Those familiar with current contemporary folk music may recognise the influences of the likes of Samantha Whates, Karine Polwart and Yvonne Lyon.
